Lore & Background
Before the history of most planes was written, Ulamog roamed the Blind Eternities alongside its siblings. It is not a creature born of flesh or blood but an abstract concept given form, designed to consume the mana that fuels reality. Its presence causes the land to wither and magic to fade, leaving only barren rock in its wake.
In Their Own Story
The ground shook not from an earthquake, but from a heartbeat. Deep beneath the crust of Zendikar, something stirred that had slept since the first stars burned out. The leylines flickered like dying candles as a single eye opened in the dark, vast and glowing with unnatural violet light. A voice echoed without sound, promising only hunger.
Reader's Guide
Legends speak of a time before memory when three great shadows fell upon the Multiverse. Among them was Ulamog, known to ancient scholars as the Ceaseless Hunger. It did not seek conquest or worship; it sought only sustenance. Wherever it walked, magic drained from the soil and life withered into ash. The people of Zendikar eventually found a way to bind this horror using seven leylines that crisscrossed their world. For millennia, the Titan slept beneath the earth, its presence felt only in tremors and nightmares. The seal held firm until a desperate planewalker sought to save his home by opening paths through reality itself. This act of desperation broke the chains. The Hunger awakened once more, moving between worlds like a plague. It was not until a coalition of heroes gathered that the threat was finally neutralized. Now, only ruins remain where it walked, and bards warn children never to look into the deep dark for too long.
