Lore & Background

The origins of Phyrexia trace back to Yawgmoth, a powerful sorcerer who sought immortality and perfection. He transformed his home plane into a biomechanical hellscape where flesh is fused with steel, eliminating pain but also free will. This Old Phyrexia was eventually destroyed by Urza during the aftermath of the Brothers' War, utilizing a massive mana bomb to crack the plane apart. However, the ideology survived in secret. Millennia later, Tezzeret aided Elesh Norn in reconstructing the plane using artifacts from Dominaria and other worlds. New Phyrexia was more organized and dangerous, capable of infecting planes through oil-based spores. This led to a Multiversal invasion that threatened to erase individuality from existence entirely. The conflict culminated in a desperate defense by Planeswalkers and mortal heroes alike. Though the main force was repelled and Elesh Norn defeated, fragments of Phyrexian corruption remain scattered across reality. The plane itself exists as a fractured memory of Yawgmoth's ambition, waiting for someone to reopen the door.
