The original imprisonment of the Eldrazi titans on Zendikar was accomplished long ago by the Planeswalkers Sorin Markov, Nahiri, and Ugin, who used the Eye of Ugin—a hedron network beneath the surface—as a trap. Millennia later, the Planeswalkers Jace Beleren, Chandra Nalaar, Ajani Goldmane, Liliana Vess, and Gideon Jura inadvertently released the Eldrazi by activating the Eye of Ugin, with Sarkhan Vol's destruction of the hedron network contributing to the release. Ulamog and Kozilek were later destroyed on Zendikar by the Gatewatch—Jace, Chandra, Gideon, and Nissa Revane—who channeled the plane's leyline mana through the hedrons as a focusing mechanism. Emrakul, however, was not trapped beneath Zendikar's surface; instead, she was lured to the plane of Innistrad and later sealed in the moon there. Since then, the plane has slowly begun to heal, with new life returning to the scarred earth, though remnants of the Eldrazi threat and the chaotic nature of its magic remain ever-present.
